POLICE in Spain say they have dismantled a migrant smuggling network that was operating in the south of the country.
The National Police say they have captured the leader of the gang and two other people – all of North African origin.
Police claim the group were operating across the provinces of Granada and Almeria in Andalucia and transferring people arriving on pateras (small boats) on the coast of Spain.
Spain is now considered the preferred destination for migrant arrivals in Europe after Italy’s new Interior Minister introduced a ban on migrant boats entering the country’s ports.
