Multiple crash in fog involving 45 cars leaves one dead and 12 injured

THIS morning (Thursday) a multi-vehicle accident occurred on the EX-A1 motorway as thick fog reduced visibility and 45 cars were involved in a pile up.

The Extremadura Red Cross organisation attended alongside fire fighters and police officers and according to the Red Cross one person died and 12 people were injured  – two of them seriously – with others having to be cut out of their vehicles.

At least six ambulances and a helicopter attended the scene, trying to evacuate the injured but the road that links Navalmoral de la Mata with Plasencia was closed for several kilometres each way.

Emergency services experienced difficulty in reaching the injured until Guardia Civil officers arrived in order to clear a path and then to start moving the damaged vehicles.

A number of people were treated on the spot for minor injuries but those who were considered to be in a worse state were taken to hospital.
