Is your age a concern?

PLEASE share the Age Concern helpline number Tel. 689 355 198.

MY grandfather used to come and stay with us and it really took me by surprise when he asked me to cut his toenails for him.

It had never occurred to me that one day, something as simple as that, would be something you wouldn’t be able to do for yourself.

And that’s just it; we often don’t think about the changes that age brings and what that means to almost every aspect of our lives.

For those who live alone, even the simplest things can become a major challenge. The Costa del Sol is now facing this challenge with our international expats.

This is an area not only overflowing with foreigners but a lot of them are now getting on in age with no one to help or look after them; some also lacking the finances to seek the help they require.

Many have lived on the coast for so long that they can’t even go back to their countries of origin and are truly alone, lonely and isolated.

This is why having Age Concern Marbella and San Pedro is going to make a big difference to our international community, but they are going to need a lot of help, from all of us.

Age Concern’s main objective is to organise as many volunteers as possible throughout our municipality to offer care and support to all those who are vulnerable and although they’re still finalising the official paperwork, there is already a helpline Tel. 689 355 198.

Volunteers are essential for this initiative to succeed. Even if you only have 15 minutes free a week you could really make a big difference by popping in to see someone for a quick chat, do a bit of shopping or take out the rubbish.

With a 27 kilometre coastline getting around can be very difficult, and costly, so if you have your own means of transport you can help by driving someone to a hospital appointment or to the shops, the list goes on.

Age Concern is for all nationalities so volunteers who also speak languages will be a big plus!

Another big plus would be a mini bus, one of the few things on the list that require a financial contribution from the community – or a generous donation from one of our local automobile companies!

These are still early days for Age Concern Marbella and San Pedro, but it’s never too soon to get your name down on the list as a volunteer so you can be contacted if needed.

This should be an easy project for us to help set up because we all know that one day it could be us needing to make that call for help.
