Man fires gun during Madrid metro brawl

POLICE in Madrid arrested two men following a fight on an underground train after one reportedly pulled out a gun and fired it above his head.

The incident occurred around 2.30pm on Line 2 of the metro near the El Carmen tube station. Passengers immediately took cover after hearing the gunshot and were later released from the carriage once the police arrived.

The altercation caused delays on both Line 2 and Line 5 but services were fully running again by 3.15pm.

No one was harmed in the incident but officers immediately arrested the two suspects who are believed to have been drinking.

A spokesperson from the Madrid metro stated that a gun was brandished during the fight and fired once into the air but polices sources implied that it was a starting pistol and not a firearm. They also ruled out any indication that the two men were terrorists.

It was later announced that police will increase security on the metro with an additional 300 officers as Spain remains on a high terror alert following last month’s attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils.
