DGT

THE first batch of seatbelt cameras have now been installed in Malaga as part of an ongoing road safety campaign across Spain.

A total of 227 will be installed across Spain with 18 of them in Malaga province.

Not wearing a seat belt is the second most common cause of death on the road, higher than drink-driving with speeding being the number one cause according to the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).

It has confirmed that short trips are the ones cause the most risk such as school runs and reiterated that youngsters smaller than 135cm must travel in the back in a special seat .

During the first two months of their operation, drivers will only receive a warning letter but after this, penalties will be introduced.

Campaign days are regularly carried out by Guardia Civil to improve road safety, these include roadside checks as well as additional speed cameras and helicopters.
