GIBRALTAR: Guardia Civil patrol boat cuts across the bow of the USS Carson City
A SPANISH Guardia Civil patrol boat has cut across the bow of a US Military Sealift Command vessel, the USS Carson City, as it entered the port of Gibraltar.
A UK Royal Navy high-performance, rigid-inflatable boat (RIB) chased off the Spanish boat, later identified as the Rio Belelle.
Incursions by Spain’s Guardia Civil and research boats into Gibraltar waters are common and usually prompt a sharp response from the British government.
However, the UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office downplayed the incident saying, “At no point was there a risk to safety.”
In May 2016, the Royal Navy’s HMS Sabre fired warning flares across the bow of a Spanish Guardia Civil boat as it tried to pass in front of the American nuclear submarine USS Florida.
