Search for missing Barcelona couple intensifies

FEARS are growing as the hunt for a young couple from Barcelona continues.

Officers from the Mossos d’Esquadra, Guardia Civil, fire and mountain rescue services are today being assisted by up to 60 local residents with knowledge of the area around Susqueda reservoir, near Osor in Cataluña.

Marc H.L., 23, and his 21-year-old girlfriend Paula M.P. vanished over a week ago after they headed to the lake for a kayak expedition.

Their Opel Zafira car was found in six metres of water last Tuesday and investigators have revealed that it was likely to have been pushed.

A stone inside the vehicle may have been used to keep the accelerator pedal depressed.

Three days earlier, a motorcyclist found their sunken kayak which had been punctured and weighed down with rocks.

An extensive search of the lake by police divers has failed to locate the pair, but a canine unit yesterday said they have uncovered a clue close to where the car was found.

Their families have described the couple as “responsible” and detectives do not currently believe that they suffered an accident, with their disappearance being treated as highly suspicious.
