IN PICTURES: Residents evacuated as fire in Leon still rages out of control

ONE of the largest fires known to have occurred in the area of Encinedo (Leon) has seen the destruction of 5,000 hectares of land, most of which are uncultivated.

Some people have had to be evacuated by emergency services including 30 from the village of Santa Eulalia.

Three hundred fire fighters together with hundreds more officers from Civil Protection, Red Cross, Military and Guardia Civil are involved and fires in three particular areas have been brought under control.

Ten aircraft including helicopters have been drafted in by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment (MAPAMA) but there is still one area where the fire is raging out of control and the authorities believe that it may take days to tame.

There are fears that the fires may have been started deliberately before getting out of hand and residents in unaffected areas have been asked to keep alert and report any suspicious activity.
