Devil of a heatwave to sweep Spain with 70 severe weather alerts issued

BLISTERING temperatures of up to 43C due to hit much of Spain this weekend as a heatwave from Africa heads north.

Meteorologists have issued more than 70 yellow and orange extreme weather warnings – scroll down for  the full list – across much of the country and have advised people to seek shade and keep hydrated.

The most intense heat is expected in the Cordoba, Jaen, Granada and Sevilla areas.

There are warnings of  an extreme fire risk in Catalonia, Andalucia and Murcia.

However, if you want to escape the heat some showers forecast in Galicia in the north of the country.

The heatwave is also expected to extend to other parts of the Mediterranean and Serbia, Hungary, Romania, Croatia, Poland. 

The Italians have given the heatwave the nickname  of Lucifer.
