Six-year-old orphaned after family tragedy in Extremaduras

FOUR PEOPLE from the same family have died whilst canyoning on the Hoyos ravine in the Sierra de Gredos.

After receiving reports of the missing family the Guardia Civil, Fire Department and a medical helicopter were mobilised in the area.

The married couple and their two daughters, aged 11 and 9, died after falling from a wet ridge.

The parents’ lifeless bodies were found by the Security and Rescue corps, while their two daughters were discovered in ‘critical condition.’ Unfortunately, when emergency medical services arrived they were unable to revive the two young girls.

“The family was making the climb with all the necessary equipment in a zone designated for beginners when the river Jerte broke its banks due to heavy morning rainfall, causing them to fall,” explained Christina Herrera, the national government delegate in the region.

The last surviving member of the family, a six-year-old son, has been transferred to a nearby hospital after suffering a traumatic brain injury.

The Red Cross has activated a psychosocial emergency plan to help the extended family of the deceased.
