GIBRALTAR Customs have announced that yesterday after keeping a local retail outlet under surveillance, they have arrested three in connection with illegal possession of cigarettes.
Officers of the Flexible Anti-Smuggling Team observed two persons in the area of Casemates Square enter the premises of a tobacco retailer which they left soon after carrying two large bags.
When the two individuals, a 31-year-old Spanish male and a 21-year old female were stopped and searched, they were found to be carrying 50 cartons of cigarettes in the bags, so both persons were arrested for being in possession of cigarettes without a permit.
The manager of the shop, who is also a Spanish national, was also arrested for breaching the shop’s tobacco retail licence.
All three have been released on police bail and are due to return on September 20.
