FIVE THOUSAND square metres of agricultural terracing and scrub were lost to fire in La Nucia’s Boliquet area.
The Policia Local, alerted by a resident, arrived at El Boliquet by 1.52pm and immediately advised the emergency services who in turn mobilised the Benidorm fire brigade.
The blaze, which originated at two separate spots, was controlled in a little over an hour.
After verifying that properties in the zone immediately adjoining the two sources of the fire were empty the police closed the road, enabling emergency vehicles to access the area without holdups.
A fire brigade helicopter prevented the flames from spreading towards the Polop gully and the fire was under control by 3.10pm.
Owing to the high temperatures, forest rangers remained all afternoon at the scene of the fire, which they hosed down to prevent embers from reviving.
La Nucia’s town hall later thanked the fire brigade, forest rangers, Policia Local, Guardia Civil and Proteccion Civil for their “rapidity, professionalism, coordination and commitment to ensuring that that fire did not spread.”
