Lemar on stage

THE highly successful singer Lemar took time out from his recording schedule to speak exclusively to the EWN Media Group of newspapers before appearing in Estepona.

This will be his first-ever show to be performed in Spain although he has been here on holiday on a number of occasions.

When asked why he had chosen Estepona for his first visit, he explained that he has been in the studio completing his first album for two years so has been looking forward to getting back on the road performing.

When he was told about the Rising Stars project, which is being organised by the newly formed Diamonds and Pearls events management company, he knew that he wanted to do what he could to help saying “I like to inspire young people and I like to be available for them. I was lucky enough to encourage by Lionel Richie and later got to play alongside him.”

This will be a lightning visit to perform at the Felipe VI in Estepona on Saturday next starting at 8.30pm with tickets costing from €25.

Lemar certainly wasn’t an overnight success as he had left university where he was studying pharmacy to perform with a number of successful soul acts and had been signed to BMG records but was left without a contract due to a company restructure.

“I was at the end of my tether and was ready to return to my studies but Fame Academy saved me – it was my last chance and it worked out.”

Although he finished third in the show which was aired in 2004, he was immediately signed by Sony Records and has had a successful career ever since, chalking up millions of discs sold and winning a number of awards including two at the BRITS and three at the MOBOS.

Now in a happy place with two young children, Lemar agrees that they have made a difference to his song writing which is now even more philosophic in nature.

The new album is as yet untitled but details will be published on Lemar’s website which can be found at www.lemar-online.com together with details of his discography and numerous collaborations with such respected performers as Joss Stone, Craig Charles and Roachford.

Tickets for the event which include the Brown Sugar Soul Band, the Rising Stars, Rachelle Fisher and dancers followed by Lemar can be obtained at the Auditorium ticket kiosk or www.eventbrite.co.uk.
