Malaga taxis must accept card payments by July 1

TAXI drivers in Malaga City must accept card payments by July 1.

Despite having two years to prepare, up to a quarter of the 1,432 cars operating in the city are still not equipped with credit card terminals, according to Malaga Council.

The data provided by the Area for Mobility showed that some 350 drivers were unwilling to add the payment option to their taxis due to the maintenance costs and the banks commission charges.

Although police have said they will not launch a campaign specifically to enforce the new regulation, officers will perform checks on drivers to see that they are complying.

The annual safety tests (ITV) taxis must take will also check for credit card terminals.

Taxis failing to comply with the new regulations will face fines between €270 and €1,380.
