Record-breaking Torremolinos Pride floods the streets

TORREMOLINOS PRIDE: A four-day spectacular.

THE third Torremolinos Pride broke all records as an estimated 40,000 revellers flooded the coastal town for the four-day spectacular.

This represents a 30 per cent increase on 2016, with organisers and councillors delighted.

It is now considered the third most important LGBT event in Spain after the prides in Madrid and Barcelona, with 9,000 people marching in the main parade last Saturday.

The motto for 2017 was ‘Se tu misma, Be Yourself,’ a nod to lesbian women who suffer from double discrimination over their sexual preferences and simply for being women.

There was also a major focus on sexually-transmitted diseases as volunteers handed out leaflets, answered questions and offered free confidential screenings.

The social and cultural messages were delivered against a hedonistic backdrop, as revellers waved rainbow flags and danced under the blazing sun.

Local businesses reported a 14 per cent increase in takings while hotel occupancy approached 100 per cent over the course of the jamboree, which closed on Sunday.
