VIII Gibraltar International Song Festival comes to an exciting end

THERE was a great deal of excitement when a packed audience attended the eight Gibraltar International Song Festival (GISF) on May 6.

It was without doubt the best GISF so far in every respect and apart from 12 finalists from nine countries, the special guest Bustamante broke off his nationwide tour to perform in front of a very appreciative audience in Gibraltar.

The whole event was broadcast on the internet and will have reached large numbers of households throughout Spain as well as Gibraltar.

An independent jury with backgrounds in song writing and music were regaled by artists representing song writers from Chile, Cuba, Venezuela, Italy, Sweden, Iceland, UK, Gibraltar and Spain.

In the end, it was a Gibraltar based writer Stuart Whitwell whose composition Starlight which was performed by Jetstream who was chosen as the winner of the Festival and received the £4,000 first prize.

In addition, Jetstream also won the Best Interpreter award for their performance and £500.

The two runners up came from Spain and Italy, but all of the composers and the performers received considerable applause from the local audience.

Thanks to the continued high quality of the event and the interest from songwriters throughout the world, this promises to continue to be an important annual event in the Gibraltar musical calendar.
