CIRCUS: Accused of slandering the mentally ill
PROTESTS are set to greet a highly controversial circus show headed for the Costa del Sol.
There are calls to ban the ‘Manicomio’ Circus of Horrors from performing across the region because of its depiction of people with mental illnesses.
The Andalucian Federation of Relatives and People with Mental Illness (FEAFES) said the show is ‘demeaning, degrading and completely distorted’ in its image of sufferers of mental health problems and professionals in the field.
They argue that holding the show violates laws which ban spectacles considered to violate people’s fundamental constitutional rights. FEAFES is convinced that the Circus of Horrors will only encourage stereotypes of people with psychological issues as violent and dangerous psychopaths who should be mocked or feared.
Circus of Horrors is due to visit the Costa del Sol from June 8-11 assuming FEAFES is unable to exert pressure on Malaga Council. The trashy theatre is a tongue-in-cheek modern day freak show that has courted controversy as society deepens its awareness of mental health issues.
