Gang of thieves drill into fuel pipelines in Spain

AFTER discovering that an oil pipeline in Castellon had been illegally accessed, officers from the Guardia Civil began a full scale investigation in order to try to identify who was responsible and whether there were any other examples.

During a five month operation, officers discovered that illegal drilling into pipelines in Huelva, Cadiz, Seville and Valencia had also taken place and not only had large volumes of material been stolen but there was a huge risk of explosion or pollution should there be a spill.

Officers then managed to identify a gang responsible for the removal of both diesel and petrol and made six arrests of individuals aged between 36 and 53.

It is estimated that over a period of two years, some 200,000 litres of fuel were stolen whilst causing damage to the pipelines which could cost €7 million to repair.
