Classics and crashes at Goodwood Members Meeting

A 1963 Jaguar E-Type and 1964 Ferrari 250 GTO, worth tens of millions of euros a piece, almost collided at the 73rd annual Goodwood Members Meeting. They missed one another by millimetres on a drizzly English afternoon that gathered some of the finest classic cars on the planet to the famed Goodwood estate in Sussex.

Cars from all eras, including a 1909 Blitzen Benz and an army of single seaters, raced the circuit in front of dozens of motoring celebrities and wealthy patrons. David Coulthard was in attendance as was Goodwood estate owner Lord March, who regularly donates millions to motoring causes.

One of the most prestigious events on the motoring calendar, the Members Meeting is an intentionally quiet affair, allowing attendees to get up close and personal with some of the finest cars in the country.

Highlights included an Edwardian-era race, a mini chasing a rover, and a moving Wall of Sound/Minute of Noise tribute to Formula One legend John Surtees who died in March.

There was a special Group A touring cars race featuring a Rover, Alpha and Capri battering around the 2.4 mile track and the Graham Hill trophy pitting Ferraris against Aston Martins.

The next big event at Goodwood will be the spectacular Festival of Speed from June 29 to July 2. This year’s theme will be ‘Peaks of Performance – Motorsport’s Game Changers’.

Lucky ticketholders can expect to see the world’s finest racing collection of 1930s Grand Prix cars, Turbo-charged F1s, and Group B Rally cars take to the hallowed circuit.
