Illegal cigarette factory shut down in Elche

ACCORDING to an official report from the National Police, officers have prevented the opening of an illegal tobacco factory in Elche which could have produced 40 million cigarettes (two million packs) just from the material seized.

Information was received that an organization based in Bulgaria and with sections in different countries of the European Union which was involved in smuggling and money laundering, was in the process of setting up this illegal and unsanitary factory.

It was established that they had obtained a warehouse property and were in the process of shipping in machinery and building premises to house workers on site. In addition, officers discovered that those behind the factory had chartered a vessel which was bringing in tobacco so that they could start manufacture.

Armed with all of this information, the officers raided the warehouse, seized the machinery and arrested five Bulgarians.
