Some of the women who received an award
IN CELEBRATION of International Women’s Day on March 8, 20 of the Costa del Sol’s most influential women were honoured at the ‘Recognised 2017’ gala in Malaga. They were awarded for their dedicated struggle to furthering the cause of equality across the region.
Many were athletes, including rugby and football players, judokas, archers and athletes, alongside Carmen Morales, captain of the Costa del Sol handball team.
Other honourees included the vice-president of the Red Cross, Encarnation Trivino, and the leaders of local women’s associations and disabled groups.
One much-loved retired matron was recognised for her services to health, while scientists and entrepreneurs from across the province also received awards.
Costa del Sol tourism chief Elias Bendodo was on hand to call for the eradication of machismo culture. He noted that women continue to face daily struggles with the wage gap, stereotypes, inequality and violence, expressing hope that today’s children will be spared such a world.
