DEFEATED: Pablo Carreno Busta

FIVE-TIME  champions Spain were locked 1-1 on the first day of their Davis Cup World Group first round clash against Croatia in Osijek.

Croatia led after the opening rubber in which Franko Skugor unexpectedly defeated Pablo Carreno Busta in a match that lasted over four hours.

“When I finished the match I was destroyed,” the Spanish player admitted.

But Spain levelled in the second rubber as Roberto Bautista Agut defeated Davis Cup debutant Ante Pavic.

Spain’s captain, Conchita Martinez, said, “My heart in that first match was unebelievable. Up and down! This is Davis Cup and sometimes it doesn’t go your way. But we’re tied at 11 and let’s go tomorrow in the doubles.”
