SHOPS in Elche are to stock dog poo sacks in a bid to encourage owners to pick up the mess after their pets.
The idea is part of a new campaign aimed at highlighting the issue.
Pet owners could also face tougher sanctions if they allow their animals to defecate on the pavement, according to Mayor Héctor Diez.
The current maximum fine is €750, but it could go higher if the warnings go unheeded.
In one neighbourhood nine penalties were imposed in the last week as part of the new get-tough attitude by the civil authorities.
Around 100 shops have agreed to stock up dispensers of poop bags in a bid to make it easier for pet owners to get the bags when needed.
