The cold snap has reached Alicante, bringing with it snow and strong winds.

What started as light snow in the early hours has worsened causing difficulties on some of the region’s roads.

The snowfall is particularly severe in Alcoy where schools have been forced to close.

It has also reached Orihuela and has started to snow on the beaches.

The Spanish national government has mobilised around 200 workers and 66 emergency vehicles to help combat icy conditions across the Valencia region.

According to a government spokesperson, 850 Guardia Civil officers are also on standby in case conditions worsen.

Alicante remains on orange alert as the worst weather is expected to arrive on Thursday (19 January).
