Benifaio: Man arrested after stabbing his daughter in back and chest

ARRESTED: The assailant has been jailed pending a court appearance.

A 49-YEAR-OLD man brutally stabbed his three-year-old child before handing himself into police in Benifaio, Valencia Province.

The shocking incident took place around 11am on Sunday, January 15, at a private home on Avenida Caixa d’Estalvis.

After stabbing his young daughter in the back and chest, the Ethiopian man calmly left his apartment and turned himself into the nearest Local Police station, believing he had killed her.

He explained that he had just stabbed the infant, leading the officers on duty to issue an urgent call to Local Police and Guardia Civil patrols.

After rushing to the seventh floor address, the officers hammered on the door, before breaking a hole in it when no reply was received.

The smallest member of the unit was able to squeeze through, and he found the severely wounded young girl lying on the sofa next to two knives and a bloodstained toy.

A paramedic was already at the scene and managed to bandage the wounds, although she had lost a lot of blood and suffered a pierced lung.

She was transferred to the intensive care unit of La Fe Hospital, where she remains in a critical condition.

The girl’s mother is Sarah Majarenas Ibarreta, a member of the ‘Levante commando’ branch of Basque separatist group ETA who was arrested in 2005 for allegedly planning to attack police barracks in Valencia.

She has been raised in several Spanish prisons, but her father was allowed to collect her at weekends.

He was born in Ethiopia but has a Greek passport and has been resident in Spain for a number of years.

Two days before he unleashed the savage attack, he posted “God protects me from my friends, because I know who my enemies are, Amen,” on his Facebook profile.

According to a relative of Ibarreta, the stabbing may have been motivated by a disagreement over custody of the child.
