TWENTY-ONE guitarists, aged under 35, of 14 different nationalities are signed up for the 32nd Andrés Segovia International Classical Guitar Competition at La Herradura Civic Centre, which pays tribute to guitar teacher Andrés Segovia on the 30th anniversary of his death.

This week the town is preparing to welcome the competitors, the jury, which for the second consecutive year is presided over by Diego Martinez, and classical guitar fans who come to enjoy the event.

Deputy Mayor Juan Jose Ruiz Joya said this will be the first time the posthumous tribute has coincided with such a big anniversary and the date of the contest has been returned to January “as it was from the beginning until a few years ago.”

The event is organised by the Mayor’s Office of La Herradura and other organisations and is aimed at concert performers under 35 years old.  Its purpose is ‘the promotion and study of the guitar, while honouring the memory of Andrés Segovia Torres.’  It will consist of three qualifying events, starting on January 17 with a raffle held at 1pm at the La Herradura Civic Centre to determine the order of performers.
