Jet fighter sound barrier booms prompt Twitter ‘terror fears’ in Marseille

A jet fighter is believed to have caused the noise.

Social media in the French port of Marseille was thrown into panic briefly after at least two loud bangs were heard across the city.

People took to Twitter amid fears that the noises might be associated with terror attacks.

But police in the city later confirmed a jet fighter had caused the noise.

The pilot broke the sound barrier flying near the city at about 1pm local time.
