Pop superstar George Michael dies on Christmas Day aged 53

GEORGE Michael has died aged 53 at his Oxfordshire home.

His publicist released a statement late on Christmas Day confirming that the former Wham! singer “passed away peacefully at home.”

Thames Valley Police have said there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding the superstar’s death. A brief statement read that an ambulance team attended Michael’s Goring property in the early afternoon.

“It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.” said his publicist in a formal statement.

“The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.”

Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London in June 1963, he formed Wham! with friend Andrew Ridgeley in 1981 and went on to sell over 100 million albums. His first solo effort Faith sold more than 20 million copies alone.

He had suffered from a severebout of pneumonia in 2011, but earlier in December 2016 had announced that he was working on a new album.
