A simple test to spot diabetes.

DIABETES as a disease is growing throughout the modern world and it has not spared the people of Gibraltar, so during Diabetes Awareness Month in November, the Gibraltar Health Authority (GHA) took a particular interest.

In the latter part of the month the award winning Effective Diabetes Education Now (EDEN) diabetes education team from Leicester arrived on the Rock to deliver bespoke diabetes training and updates to the staff of the GHA in the School of Health Studies at St Bernard’s Hospital.

Now that they have departed, the GHA has had a chance to consider the effectiveness of their training and the help it has given to health professionals especially with regards to new developments so that they can provide effective advice, care and management.

In total some 72 members of the authority drawn from a wide range of specialities including ambulance staff, nurses, healthcare assistants, hospital doctors, GPs and Consultants attended the courses and the overall impression was that they were very professional and useful.

The instructors reported to the Minister of Health, Neil Costa that they were impressed by the enthusiasm of all who attended the courses and noted that the actual attendance rate was very high and they are looking forward to returning in the future to meet up with those that they missed as well as alerting those who attended this year to any new developments.
