Invisible iPhones

A SOPHISTICATED scam selling non-existent mobile phones online across Spain was tracked down to the Costa del Sol and dismantled by the National Police.

More than 100 victims were defrauded of some €70,000 before the scammers were arrested. The investigation was kicked off by a Malaga man for claimed to have paid €359.99 for a phone in April which was never delivered.

Months of investigation uncovered an elaborate set up whereby multiple auction website were set up and the vast bulk of deliveries would be made, lending credibility to the site and confidence to new buyers.

Profits from the small fraction of phones which didn’t arrive would go straight into the fraudsters pockets and when one website was queried it would shut down and another pop up.

Eventually all the websites shut down but investigators were able to follow the financial trail and have now arrested three suspects in different cities across the country.
