Champions League roundup: Messi misses record as Arsenal and Man City go through

LIONEL Messi scored as Barcelona thumped Borussia M’gladbach 4-0 but the Argentine star narrowly missed out on matching Cristiano Ronaldo’s Champions League group stage record of 11 goals, scoring 10 across six matches.

Still it was enough to see the Catalan men top Group C with 15 points, having only lost to Man City who were guaranteed to qualify for the knockout stages in second. They were held to a draw at the Etihad by Celtic and may be fined by UEFA after crowd trouble broke out in the stadium with 13 arrests.

Outside one Celtic fan was arrested for throwing a burger at a police horse as his team finished bottom of the group, missing out on the Europa League spot with no victories and only three points.

Atletico Madrid lost their perfect record to Bayern Munich but still came top of Group D, matching Barcelona on 15 points, while Bayern came second. Arsenal and PSG dominated their group with Arsene Wenger’s men finishing first with a 4-1 away win in Basel.

Napoli and Benfica made up the rest of the qualifiers on Tuesday, while tonight’s matches are mostly a formality with Real Madrid, Juventus, Leicester, and Dortmund already through.
