Rave fire death toll ‘could hit 40’

The bodies of nine people have so far been found in the burned out remains of a warehouse in Oakland, California, that was being used as a rave venue.
But authorities believe the death toll could be as high as 40 and it is thought up to 100 people were inside the building when the fire broke out at 0730 GMT on Saturday.
The building contained studios used by artists and the only exit from one floor was a staircase made of wooden pallets, according to a fire chief.
Anyone living there would have been doing so without official permission, said one civic official.
Firefighters arriving at the scene found no sprinklers and no alarm was sounding.
