Far Right Austrian presidential candidate loses election re-run

The Far Right candidate in Austria’s presidential election has lost in a contest which is being seen as a vote of confidence in the EU.
Standing on an anti-immigration platform, Norbert Hofer had previously pledged a referendum on EU membership if there were any moves towards further integration.
The former head of the Green Party, Alexander Van der Bellen, defeated him in Sunday’s election re-run after the first result was annulled by the courts.
European Union leaders have welcomed the result, with France’s President Francois Hollande thanking the Austrian electorate for “choosing Europe and openness.”
France, Germany and the Netherlands have general elections in 2017.
