FORMER Spanish foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo struck a defiant tone on Gibraltar in a recent interview with national broadsheet El Pais.
The outspoken minister who courted controversy with his strong views on the Rock and Catalan independence said he had no regrets over his tough talk on the two territories.
Asked whether Gibraltarian officials would be pleased with his departure from the front lines Margallo said he had “no doubt about it” but that “their joy is premature”.
“I am certain that no Spanish government will waste the opportunity presented by Brexit” he continued.
The 72-year-old is promoting his new book ‘Europe and the future’ after an eventful five year stint as Rajoy’s foreign minister. He has said that Spain would demand control of Gibraltar the “very next day” after Britain leaves the EU.
