AFTER much comment on social media, prompted by a global campaign undertaken by the Humane Society International and Beijing Capital Animal Welfare Association which showed footage of Pizza, said to be the world’s saddest polar bear in distress, his owners, Grandview Shopping Mall have announced that he will be moved temporarily from his ‘home’ in the mall whilst it is renovated.

The Guangzhou Grandview Aquarium which was only opened in January of this year but apart from fish, also houses beluga whales, walrus calves, a wolf and arctic foxes as well as Pizza has seen a huge media campaign against the keeping of these mammals with Pizza in particular displaying stereotypical behaviour such as head swaying and repetitive pacing which is said to be evidence of frustration and mental decline.

It is reported that the polar bear will be moved temporarily to a park in North China where he was born, reuniting him with his parents whilst his enclosure is updated but while animal activists are calling for the aquarium to be closed down with Pizza allowed to enjoy fresh air and a life in the sun, the owners are talking about an expansion which could see giant pandas and white tigers arriving at the mall so that visitors can take even more selfies.
