Religious assets targeted by vandals

TARGET: The San Andres church in Torre del Mar.

THE National Police are investigating two separate attacks on religious sites which happened in Velez Malaga and Torre del Mar last week.

On Wednesday (November 9) vandals broke the glass protecting sculptures of the Holy Family by Jose Casamayor at the Las Carmelitas convent in Velez centre, while on the Friday graffiti appeared on the doors to the San Andres parish church in Torre del Mar.

Residents woke parish priest Miguel Angel Alonso at 7.30am on Friday, he reported, to alert him that somebody had scrawled the phrase “Get me down from the Cross you hypocrites,” on the doors of the building.

Yet the priest was quick to say he didn’t think the attack had religious motives and said it was probably the work of bored trouble-makers. It is, however, the first time anything like it has happened in the seven years he has been based at the church, the priest said.

The National Police force has pledged to do all it can to identify those responsible for the two incidents.
