TORREVIEJA’S Health Department has kicked off its annual vaccination campaign. This year, local health workers are hoping to administer a total of 29,500 doses of the anti-flu vaccine.
Populations served will include Guardamar, Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja, San Miguel, Pilar de la Horadada, Rojales, San Fulgencio, Benijofar and Los Montesinos. Vaccination points will be available in numerous health centres and doctor’s offices throughout the communities.
Head of Preventative Medicine José Tuells stated that it is important to get vaccinated every year. Tuells noted that “the composition of the vaccine varies depending on the strain of flu. Although we may be immune to the flu of 2015, the same thing won’t necessarily occur in 2016, so it is important to go back and get vaccinated again.”
Although all citizens are encouraged to get vaccinated as soon as possible, the Health Department points out that those at high or moderate risk of developing complications should be especially vigilant.
Examples include people over the age of 60, adults and minors with chronic cardiorespiratory illnesses, pregnant women, or those living in closed institutions such as retirement homes or hospitals.
