Dodgy mechanics caught

SHIFTY BUSINESS: Premises were found to be operating unofficially.

THE Guardia Civil’s nature protection arm, SEPRONA, has uncovered a total of 791 violations in car repair workshops throughout the region during May and July this year.

The shocking data has emerged following a campaign to combat unlawful mechanics, within which 337 workshops were investigated.

It was carried out in collaboration with FEVAUTO Valencia, the regional association of vehicle repair workshops in Valencia Province, who have themselves been working with the regional police force to produce a whistleblowing newsletter for exposing unlicensed operations.

Of the 337 premises visited, 50 were found to be operating on an unofficial basis, while 19 others were registered but in reality operated different types of business.

Violations other than a lack of the requisite documentation or qualifications included the correct disposal of waste, for which 161 sanctions were dished out.

FEVAUTO will now work with the associations of Alicante and Castellon to produce an online database of trustworthy mechanics under the new campaign ‘My Workshop Trust.’
