PAS DE VALLGORNERA: Has 67km of tunnels as yet unexplored.
ONLY scientific visits to the famous cave of Pas de Vallgornera in Llucmajor are now allowed. After control of the underground labyrinth was ceded by the Balearic Speleology Federation to the environment ministry, tougher restrictions have been imposed.
There were concerns that an influx of tourists might damage the space’s natural harmony and prevent proper scientific analysis of the watery maze of tunnels, some 67km of which remain unexplored.
The cave was unknown to the outside world until 1968 when drilling to create a septic tank for a hotel uncovered one of Europe’s largest networks of ancient flora, minerals and geological wonders.
