Flood risks not yet averted

THE cleaning works initiated by Almuñecar Council, intended to clear the riverbeds which cross the town and La Herradura before the onset of the autumn rains, have ground to a halt due to a lack of support from the Junta de Andalucia regional government.

Francisco Alba, councillor for agriculture and maintenance, voiced his dissatisfaction with the turn of events, which have left the river channels full of reeds and other plants, increasing the likelihood of serious flooding in the event of a storm.

Alba went on to explain how the council had submitted a request for expert assistance in what he considers to be essential work due to previous bad experiences, but until now no reply has been forthcoming.
