Search dogs really can be a man’s best friend

SPECIALIST TRAINING: Rescue teams during the exercise.

A TEAM of firefighters from Malaga visited the Costa Blanca as part of a dog training search and rescue exercise. The event was staged at the old quarry in Cox to train specialists and dogs on the rescue of people buried by disasters.

The simulation saw a person trapped in a mock demolition with dogs trying to find them, working by the scents left on the stones. The training given used the ‘Arcon’ method,  one endorsed by the United Nations, and is commonly used to search for survivors of earthquakes.

Fifteen volunteers from the Ecos association, which organised the exercise in Cox, also travelled to Ecuador to help in the relief effort following the earthquake in April this year.
