A LONG WAY ROUND: Temporary alternative routes are being looked into.
THE Fernando Reig suspension bridge in Alcoy is still closed and is likely to remain so for some time.
It was barred to traffic and pedestrians at the end of July after damage was detected in one of the suspension cables. It reopened after five days but was closed again six days later on the orders of the national government’s Ministry of Public Works.
The damaged cable is being replaced, but the bridge will not reopen until its safety can be totally guaranteed, said Alcoy’s mayor Antonio Frances, after speaking to government officials.
“While engineers are replacing the cable they are also examining the others one by one to make sure that they are in perfect condition,” Frances said.
Meanwhile, the council is looking for alternative routes and detours for traffic now that the summer break is over and road traffic is busier.
