Heroes welcomed for fundraiser

AFTER the heroic efforts by voluntary firefighters to keep back the flames that threatened to engulf Javea and other nearby communities, people across the region are coming together to give something back.

EWN talked to Gary and Kim, owners of Legend’s Bar in Javea, who, together with local resident Neva Morgan, have planned a special get-together for the voluntary firefighters and emergency service workers of the fire-hit region. They would like to express their personal thanks to all the voluntary workers who fought so hard to keep the flames at bay and kept the evacuation running smoothly. To this end, they have invited all volunteers to come along to Legend’s Bar on Thursday September 15 from around 8pm for free drinks and nibbles.

The head of the Balcon al Mar volunteer firefighters, Alan Norton, will be in attendance along with all of his team and it is also hoped that Mayor Jose Chulvi will stop by to give thanks to the collective.

As the memories of the events recede, and thoughts turn to the future everyone in the Javea area wants to do their ‘bit’ to express appreciation for the courageous firefighters who stopped the blaze in its tracks. Many events are being organized and even T-shirts have been printed to support the cause.

Any member of the public is welcome to come along to express their gratitude and there will be opportunities to make donations to the voluntary firefighters. The group doesn’t receive any money from the regional government and has to rely on funding from the town hall. Donations of this kind are a great way to help them replace equipment lost or damaged during the disaster.

It has been an emotional time for everyone who lives in or has family or friends in the region but it’s heart-warming to think that there are so many people who want to express their gratitude to these true local heroes.
