THE Nerja branch of Lions Club International is collecting old pairs of glasses to be donated to developing countries.
The club has aided those with sight problems since blind American author, Helen Keller, challenged the organisation to become ‘knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness’, in 1925.
The club is urging potential donors to ask their friends and neighbours to help out, and to dig out any old unused pairs.
The glasses donated in southern Spain will be sent to an eye hospital in Alicante, where they will be cleaned and recalibrated before being shipped to developing countries.
The campaign’s collection points in Nerja can be found in Clinica St. Cecilia, 46 Calle Los Huertos, and Cudeca Charity Shop, 15 Calle Almirante, Carranza.
Another collection point is available at Mini Market PAKY, 9 Calle San Miguel, in Maro.
