Midnight hikers lost in the wilderness

AT 10.50pm on the evening of Saturday August 27 a call was received on the Andalucia emergency line 112 advising that a large group of hikers had failed to return to their home base after setting off for a special walk through the Sierras Tejeda, Almijara y Alhama Parque Natural and they appeared to have got lost.

As there were some 45 people involved including children, the emergency services immediately sprang into action consisting of officers from the Local Police of Frigiliana, the Guardia Civil, Firefighters from Nerja and the Nerja Civil Protection.

It appeared that the hikers had planned a route along the Rio Higueron but became disorientated and wandered off the trail and after several hours the search party discovered the group who were assisted back to their base with a number of tired children but happily no injuries.
