THE Gibraltar Port Authority was pleased to announce on August 4 that it was welcoming a new pilot to its ranks as Captain Pete Hilbert has recently successfully completed his four month long period of familiarisation, probation and assessment.

He brings a wealth of experience to the Gibraltar Pilots’ Partnership having served and been master of passenger ferries and other commercial vessels. Gibraltar pilots play a pivotal part in the maintenance of safety in Gibraltar Territorial Waters, through the direct navigation of over 8,000 ships coming into the anchorage or sailing to and from the harbour every year.

Minister for the Port, Paul Balban MP commented that he was “delighted with the appointment of Captain Hilbert, further increasing the level of maritime expertise and experience within the entities charged with ensuring safety of navigation in our busy waters”.

Captain of the Port, Commodore Bob Sanguinetti added that “Pete joins a team of seven dedicated pilots, whose ship handling expertise and detailed knowledge of local waters and conditions underpins the Port Authority’s marine safety organisation and procedures”.
