THE red flag was hoisted for several hours at the Arenas del Sol beach in Elche after a man was attacked by what is thought to be a shark at around 11.30am on Friday (July 29).
Lifeguards have indicated that the man, 40, emerged from the sea with blood streaming from his hand after experiencing a bite which medical workers subsequently described as “serious”. All of the other bathers were promptly evacuated from the sea while the man was attended to.
The victim, who is a resident of Elche, was transported to the hospital where he got some stitches for the wound.
The Spanish media has reported that the attack can most likely be attributed to a Blue Shark. These small sharks generally prefer to snack on squid and other sea creatures, and do not commonly go after humans.
