LUXURY SHOPPING: Plaza Mayor is to receive a lavish upgrade.

ONE of the most important commercial projects planned for the Costa del Sol in recent years has been given the green light by the Junta de Andalucia regional government, provided a series of as-yet-unplanned measures are taken.

Developers are keen to expand the Plaza Mayor shopping centre, located between Malaga City and Torremolinos, with the addition of a 23,000 square metre ‘outlet’ for luxury brands, involving an investment of €115 million and creating hundreds of jobs.

The Ministry of Environment initially vetoed the master plan due to the risk of inundation from the nearby River Guadalhorce, but the Director General of the Public-Hydraulic Domain has now issued a favourable report stating that provided anti-flood mechanisms are included, there is no reason why the scheme should not go ahead.

Amplification of the complex will include transforming an existing 10,000-square-metre space, currently housing leisure facilities, into a brand addict’s paradise, supplemented by a new 12,725-square-metre construction which is to be built on an existing car park.
