A 30-YEAR-OLD man from Zaragoza died in a rafting accident on Saturday, June 18, after the boat he and five other people were piloting capsized.
The tragedy took place in the Aragon Pyrenees of Huesca, on a well-known stretch of whitewater in the River Gallego drainage, as the force of the raging watercourse prevented the other occupants of the vessel helping their stricken friend, who disappeared beneath the rushing water.
Mountain rescue and the Guardia Civil were alerted, and it took four hours for them to locate the lifeless body of the victim, which had become trapped beneath a rock in a metre-and-a-half of water.
Descent of the Gallego is one of the Pyrenees’ ‘classic’ rafting routes, offering spectacular views of ‘Los Mallos de Riglos’, a famous series of conglomerate rock formations which attract rock climbers from all over the world.
