No more extensions for Nerja's chiringuitos

The original contracts were to last 10 years.

CONTRACTS to run Nerja’s chiringuitos (beach bars), which have been in the same hands for 16 years, are to be put out for tender next year, the council has announced.

The chiringuito contracts were awarded in 2000 and although they were for 10 years, the previous council had been automatically extending them for another year each summer. However, at a plenary session last week the current council members decided that the contracts should be officially tendered again in September, although the current contract holders will remain in place until June 30, 2017.

Chiringuito management representatives attended the council session and asked for the process to award the new contracts to take into account factors including how long the bidders have been running their bars and the employment they have created rather than just how much money they can pay.
